Nicholson Home

Back in 1991, a friend of mine and I headed out to go on a photography expedition.
We decided to head North from Lafayette, and ended up in Washington.
An antique store owner advised us that we should go over to the Nicholson House, as it was rich with history. And boy was it!
My friend was quite a bit bolder than I and she marched right up the steps of the house and knocked. Much to my surprise, Miss Mildred came out and welcomed us very enthusiastically. Miss Mildred was the first Miss Louisiana in 1931!
She gave us a guided tour of the house, both inside and out. The house was amazing and the spirit was palpable as you moved through. She advised us that we could go upstairs to the attic, which had been used as the Union hospital. We were amazed to find that it had been left as is after the departure of the troops. Saws and various surgery implements were scattered about the attic, accompanying a very large bloodstain on the floor. I'm sure the blood probably contained the DNA of many soldiers who were unfortunate enough to end up there.
In the front doorway there was a picture of Union troops standing and sitting on the front porch. She named a General that was front and center in the photo. I have always contended that it was General Nathaniel Banks, but in my research I haven't been able to place him in Washington.
Beneath the house was trench that had been dug out and Miss Mildred informed us that at one time it was the start of a tunnel which led to the outskirts of town.
There was also an unexplainable blue orb underneath the house that had no apparent source.
Very strange indeed.
I wish that I had the photos that were taken that day. Unfortunately, my friend passed away due to an auto accident after she had moved up North.
I would love to see those photos to remember more exact details.
I would recommend a visit, but unfortunately after Miss Mildred passed (2001) the home seems to have fallen into disrepair.
